Synthesis and properties of chromium(V) trifluoride oxide CrOF3 and related oxo-anions

Abstract

Chromium trifluoride oxide has been prepared from CrO3 and BrF3, followed by cautious fluorination. It has been characterised by elemental analysis, i.r., u.v.–visible, e.s.r. spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility, and a number of its properties are described. The compound CsCrOF4 has been prepared from Cs2Cr2O7 and BrF3 and similarly characterised, but attempts to isolate salts containing the [CrOF5]2– ion by a variety of methods were unsuccessful.
