Cluster formation in rare gas matrices. Models for the aggregation processes

Abstract

By co-condensing metal, ligand and rare gas in the appropriate proportions at low temperatures one can produce metal clusters or cluster compounds usually for spectroscopic study. We show that assignment of spectral features to specific clusters is greatly aided by performing experiments where the total metal concentration varies. Assuming monomeric reagents initially, several ways in which products form in the matrix are considered. These fall into two categories: statistical and kinetic. The former involves the formation of product due to the random placement of reagent molecules close together. This is shown to underestimate the formation of clusters in the matrix. The latter considers products formed during a short period after condensation while the reagent and noble gas particles are still mobile. Two simple models for these processes are considered. One of these is shown to reproduce adequately the product distributions observed in several experiments.
