The oxidation of some ruthenium(II) complexes of o-phenanthroline and bipyridyl by thallic ion in perchloric acid

Abstract

The order of reaction, rate constants, and activation energies, for the oxidation of eleven ruthenium(II) complexes, in 4·75M-perchloric acid medium, have been studied. The effects of solvent, light, and added compounds on the rate of reaction are also reported, and a reaction mechanism is postulated, which accords with the equations Ru(o-phen)32++ Tl3+ Ru(o-phen)33++ Tl2+, Ru(o-phen)32++ Tl2+ Ru(o-phen)33++ Tl+(fast)

The visible and ultraviolet spectra of the complexes and some of their oxidation–reduction potentials are also reported.
