17O and 1H NMR chemical shifts of hydroxide and hydronium ion in aqueous solutions of strong electrolytes

Abstract

The 17 O and 1 H NMR chemical shifts of water [δ( 17 OH 2 ), δ( 1 H 2 O)] in aqueous solutions of NaCl, NaBr, NaI, NaNO 3 , NaClO 4 , NaOH, KCl, KBr, KNO 3 and KOH have been measured and used to determine the δ( 17 O), and δ( 1 H) chemical shifts of hydroxide ion and some of its aqua-complexes. The δ( 17 O), and δ( 1 H) chemical shifts for the OH - ···nH 2 O and H + ···nH 2 O complexes are discussed.
