Sunlight-induced Regio- and Stereo-specific (2π+2π) Cycloaddition of Arylethenes to 2-Substituted-1,4-naphthoquinones†

Abstract

2-Acetoxy-1,4-naphthoquinone undergoes photochemical regio- and stereo-specific (2π+2π) addition to styrene and 1,1-diphenylethene in high yield, whereas the stilbenes yield mainly spirooxetanes: the cyclobutane formation occurs essentially quantitatively in sunlight.
