Hiatus in the spherical shell model of fullerenes

Abstract

The icosahedral multipoles that break the spherical symmetry in C20, C60 and C80 are identified as the L = 6, 10, and 12 components respectively. In all these cages the dominant structural feature of the valence shell is the influence of the pentagonal defects.
