Adding the second dimension with cadmium: two-dimensional sheets assembled from cadmium(ii) and 4′-phenyl-4,2′:6′,4′′-terpyridine and locked by π-stacked interactions

Abstract

4′-Phenyl-4,2′:6′,4′′-terpyridine (3) reacts with Cd(NO3)2·4H2O in MeOH–CHCl3 to produce [Cd(3)2(ONO2)2·MeOH·CHCl3]n in high yield; two sets of undulating chains built up from trans-related ligands result in the formation of two-dimensional sheets, locked together by efficient π-stacking involving the phenyl substituents.
