Isomeric B10C2H13 ions derived from the direct reduction of B10C2H12

Abstract

The direct reduction of 1,2-B10C2H12 with sodium metal in tetrahydrofuran produced the B10C2H122– ion, treatment of B10C2H122– ion with water afforded two isomeric B10C2H13 ions, the least stable of which could be thermally converted to the more stable; analysis of the n.m.r. spectra of these B10C2H13 ions indicate that they may include a methylene type polyhedral carbon atom; pyrolysis of [Me4N][B10C2H13] produced Me3N·BH2B10C2H11 and [Me4N][7,9-B9C2H12].
