Photochemical activation of ethene C–H bonds of (η5-C5H5)lr(C2H4)2 in low-temperature matrices and in solution

Abstract

A series of vinyl hydride complexes, cplr(L)(η1-C2H3)H (cp =η5-C5H5), have been characterised on photolysis of cplr(C2H4)2 by i.r. spectroscopy in low-temperature matrices (L = C2H4, CO) and by n.m.r. spectroscopy in solution (L = C2H4, PPh3, Me2SO); cplr(C2H4)(η1-C2H3)H undergoes secondary photolysis in matrices to form the vinylidene complex, cplr(C[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2)(H)2.
