Ethylene dimerization: an alternative route involving vinyl hydride intermediates

Abstract

The new complex Tp*Ir(C2H4)21[Tp*= hydrotris(3,5-dimethyl-1-pyrazolyl)borate] rearranges thermally into the hydrido-allyl Tp*Ir(H)(η3-CH2CHCHMe)2(cyclohexane, 60 °C, 15 h) through the intermediate vinyl-hydride Tp*Ir(H)(CH[double bond, length half m-dash]CH2)(C2H4)3, as demonstrated by an independant synthesis of 3 and its clean conversion into 2.
