Reactivity of ruthenium 5,10,15,20-tetramesitylporphyrin towards diazoesters: formation of olefins

Abstract

Ruthenium 5,10,15,20-tetramesitylporphyrin, Ru(tmp), reacts with 1 equiv. of N2CHCO2Et to afford the ethoxycarbonylcarbene [Ru(tmp)[double bond, length as m-dash]CHCO2Et] in the presence of an excess of N2CHCO2Et; the latter catalyses the formation of diethyl maleate as the major product at a rate of approximately one turnover per second.
