Photo-responsive linear and cross-linked supramolecular polymers based on host–guest interactions

Abstract

By incorporating a photochromophore, an azobenzene group, into a low molecular weight heteroditopic AB-type monomer, photo-responsive linear or cross-linked supramolecular polymers were prepared. After UV irradiation, both the linear and cross-linked supramolecular polymers showed obvious decrease in viscosity. More importantly, gels formed from the cross-linked supramolecular polymer could realize reversible photo-induced sol–gel transitions via UV or visible light irradiation. The work presented here provided an effective strategy to introduce photo-responsive properties into supramolecular polymers with different topological structures and to prepare complex and highly ordered supramolecular structures.
