Synthesis of copolymers with an exact alternating sequence using the cationic polymerization of pre-sequenced monomers

Abstract

Alternating copolymers composed of styrene/methyl vinyl ether derived repeating units and styrene/vinyl alcohol based repeating units were synthesized through the cationic polymerization of 1,3-butadiene derivatives and the subsequent hydrogenation reaction. The microstructure of the resulting polymers was characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The effect of an alternating sequence on the fluorescence emissions of the products was investigated.
