Converting benzene into γ-graphyne and its enhanced electrochemical oxygen evolution performance

Abstract

We report the first use of benzene as a precursor in mechanosynthesis of γ-graphyne. Through the solid–liquid interfacial reaction with CaC2, gram-scale γ-graphyne can be obtained. EDX, Raman, XPS spectra and SAED patterns confirmed the composition and structure of γ-graphyne. Two-dimensional morphology, with a perimeter about 400 nm and thickness around 0.7 nm, was observed from TEM and AFM images for the as-prepared samples. γ-Graphyne/Ni foam electrodes were constructed and a stable and efficient oxygen evolution reaction performance was demonstrated, with a low overpotential of 290 mV at 100 mA cm−2. This work provides an energy-efficient, low-environmental-impact and mechanochemical preparation of γ-graphyne which paves the way for its future research and applications.
