Acetone +NN-dimethylformamide solvent system. Part 2.—Conductance studies of some electrolytes in acetone +NN-dimethylformamide mixtures at 25 °C

Abstract

Precise equivalent conductances of Bu4NBBu4, Bu4NClO4, KI, LiI, LiClO4 and AgClO4 in NN-dimethylformamide (DMF), Bu4NBBu4, Bu4NI, Bu4NClO4, KI, LiClO4 and AgClO4 in acetone (Ac) and Bu4NBBu4, Bu4NI, Bu4NClO4, KI, NaI, LiI, LiClO4 and AgClO4 in acetone +NN-dimethylformamide (Ac + DMF) mixtures over the whole composition range at 10 mol % intervals have been measured at 25 °C. Conductance data in all the cases have been analysed using the 1957 Fuoss–Onsager equation. Limiting ion conductances have been calculated by sub-dividing Λ0 values of Bu4NBBu4 into two equal parts. Evaluation of solvated radii and hence the solvation numbers of Li+, Na+, K+ and Ag+ in Ac + DMF mixtures shows strong preferential solvation by DMF of Li+ and Na+ up to 30 mol % DMF and of Ag+ up to 20 mol % DMF in the mixtures.
