Electron spin resonance spectrum of tetrakis(diethylamino)vanadium(IV)

Abstract

The e.s.r. spectrum of V(NEt2)4 dissolved in Ti(NEt2)4, pentane, hexane, benzene, and cyclohexane, has been determined in the temperature range 20 to –150°. There is a slight variation of the g and A values in the various frozen glasses. The values g= 1·949, g= 1·986, A= 0·0123 cm.–1 and A= 0·0026 cm–1, obtained from the glass in Ti(NEt2)4, in conjunction with spectral measurements, have been interpreted in terms of an MO scheme for the molecule. This treatment has been compared with a similar one for V(OBut)4. The major difference being a considerably greater degree of ligand participation in the molecular orbital involving the metal dxy orbital in the dialkylamino-derivative compared with the t-butoxy-compound.
