Co-ordinating tendencies of the hexafluorophosphate ion

Abstract

The compounds Cu(py)4(PF6)2, Ni(py)6(PF6)2, Ni(py)4(PF6)2, and Ni(4-mepy)4(PF6)2(py = pyridine and 4-mepy = 4-methylpyridine) have been prepared and characterized. The magnetic moment, electronic and i.r. spectral data are interpreted as indicating that the PF6 ion has less co-ordinating ability than the ClO4 and BF4 ions.
