Substituent effects in the ultraviolet spectra of 1,4-dihydropyridines

Abstract

The ultraviolet spectra of a series of 1,4-dihydropyridines containing ethoxycarbonyl, acetyl, or nitrile groupings in the 3,5-positions, and methyl groups or protons in the 1-, 2-, 4-, and 6-positions, have been measured. The substituent effects on the absorption maxima of the long-wavelength band have been correlated with steric and electronic factors. The visible spectra of some 1,4-dihydropyridine anions are recorded.
