Synthesis and hydrolysis of some fused-ring β-lactams

Abstract

Several β-lactams having 1,4-fused homocyclic rings have been prepared, and the rates of hydrolysis of some have been measured. The rate of hydrolysis of a β-lactam having a fused five-membered ring in the 1,4-position was found to be very much greater than that of a β-lactam without a fused ring and than those of β-lactams having a fused six-membered ring.
