The structure of clavicipitic acid, an azepinoindole derivative from Claviceps fusiformis

Abstract

Clavicipitic acid, an amphoteric indole derivative from Claviceps fusiformis, is identified by mass spectral and 1H n.m.r. studies as 3,4,5,6-tetrahydro-6-(2-methylprop-1-enyl)-1H-azepino[5.4,3-cd]indole-4-carboxylic acid (4) and shown to exist in two diastereoisomeric forms.
