Some studies of substituent effects on the nucleophilic reactivities of thiophenoxide ions

Abstract

The rate constants have been measured for reaction of a series of 16 substituted thiophenoxides with 1-chloro-2,4-dinitrobenzene in 95%(v/v) ethanol–water at 25° using a stopped-flow spectrophotometric method. The values obtained which give a measure of the nucleophilic reactivities of the thiophenoxides correlate very well with the corresponding carbon basicities.
