Radiolysis of aqueous solutions of nitric oxide

Abstract

Earlier studies1 have been extended over a range of pH and of NO concentration. The modified simple mechanism suggested for alcohol + NO solutions2 accounts quantitatively for all the data at pH 7. Nitrogen yields from irradiated NO+N2O mixtures conform with a simple competition for eaq without intervention of the long lived species N2O previously suggested.1 Thermal reactions of H2O2 in acid and alkaline solutions are considered and kinetic data are reported. (Geaq+GH) measured as G(N2O) for 1.9 mM NO increases from 3.15 ± 0.1 at pH 7 to 3.6 ± 0.1 at pH 0.45 and to 3.40 ± 0.15 at pH 12.8. GOH+Geaq+GH measured as G(NO2) at pH 7 increases linearly with [NO] from 5.65 ± 0.15 in 0.5 mM NO to 6.80 ± 0.25 in 13 mM NO. No evidence was found for the formation of O atoms. The Data are discussed in relation to current theories.
